Are you looking for ideas using barn wood and antique wood in interior design?

This Ottertail lake home interior had its beginning with an owner who wanted their home to have the look and feel of a 19th-century era farm building that had been repurposed into an attractive and homey 21st century home. I was glad to give the project my best effort.

The cathedral ceiling is made out of Tulip Poplar reclaimed from an Ohio home built in 1840. These boards were hand sawn, hand planed, hand tongue and grooved and hand beaded. Many of the boards were up to 16″ width and 14′ length. I repeat the word,” hand” because I have respect and admiration for the craftsman of 1840 who did such impressive work. We endeavored to do them honor as we gave it a new life.

The hand-hewn post and beams were reclaimed from various barns throughout PA. They were all pressure washed and kiln dried. Most of the hand-hewn beams still have the original mortise pockets, many still have the hand carved pins still running through the pocket. Again these posts and beams have much more significance if one just takes time to think about the labor and craftsmanship is required to fell the tree with an ax, delimb it and hew straight and true with a broad ax.

The fireplace mantle in this home showcases a truly beautiful hand hewn timber.

The main floors are reclaimed original surface antique oak 3″ – 10″ width.

The kitchen island and bar are uniquely beautiful and great history, The tops of island and bar are showcasing Threshing Floors, circa 19th century starting their life of service to the farmer with horse and wagon traversing and impressing their surface.

The kitchen cabinetry was built in Stickley style. The cabinets are closer to fine furniture than they are to the typical kitchen. They feature beautiful quarter-sawed White Oak, solid wood construction. mortise and tenon joinery with through tenons. The countertops are built of concrete by a very skilled concrete finisher.

Time marched on and the horse was replaced by the John Deere. The strong and beautiful Heart Pine took it all in stride and now it spends its retirement on Ottertail Lake. The legs are hand-hewn White Oak. The edge of the Island and Bar are framed by reclaimed White Oak 2x4’s.

I also custom made wood panels to hide the appliances ..like the dishwasher in this photo.

All the interior doors are barn doors. We hand selected some of the most spectacular barn board for color and size to be used for these doors. Some of these doors are sliding doors while others are hinged. All feature hand forged hardware, hinges, thumb latches, door track, and rollers.

Using rustic antique woods make even a modern bathroom flow seemlessly with the feel of the rest of the home!
